Panhandle Watermelon Festival in Chipley, Florida Announces 2012
Entertainment Lineup
Festival Chairman Colby Peel today announced that the 56th
Annual Panhandle Watermelon Festival will feature Nashville
Recording Artist Mark Chesnutt.
Held the last full weekend in June each year, the Watermelon
Festival remains one of the longest-running completely free
festivals in the Southeast United States, and the 2012 event
will be held June 22 and 23 in Chipley, Florida.
The festival weekend begins on Friday, June 22 with a
concert at Pals Park in Downtown Chipley, featuring Mark
Chesnutt and up-and-coming country artist Chad Street, who
opened the 2011 concert to rave reviews.
Marty Raybon, formerly the lead singer for the country group
Shenandoah will headline the Saturday event at the
Washington County Ag Center on Highway 90 in Chipley, with
local favorite Big Bend Bluegrass opening for Raybon, and
the weekend promises to be bigger and better than ever.
Friday evening includes the introduction of elected
officials and political candidates as kid’s activities,
prizes and giveaways and assorted entertainment fill the
festival grounds at Pals Park.
Saturday kicks off with a 5k run at 7:30AM, with the
Panhandle Shrine Club hosting their annual Pancake
Breakfast, also beginning at 7:30. The Annual Watermelon
Parade begins at 10AM, and there is no registration required
to participate in the parade.
Following the parade, activities shift to the Agriculture
Center on Highway 90 in Chipley for a full lineup of
entertainment in the air conditioned auditorium along with a
wide variety of vendors and assorted entertainment,
including a classic car show, food and fun.
Recognition of all local Pageant Queens and other special
guests starts 11:45AM, with the perennial ‘Watermelon
Auction’ at 1PM. Tournament-style horseshoe pitching and
the Chipley Kiwanis Club serving free watermelon slices to
visitors remain traditional features of the festival and
there is literally something for everyone.
This will be Mark Chesnutt’s first visit to Chipley, and he has
indicated that he is looking forward to the visit. Born in
1963 in Beaumont, Texas, Chesnutt has been a torchbearer for
traditional country music since the early 1990s, with his
first single ‘Too Cold at Home’ marking a string of 12 Top
10 hits for MCA Nashville. Other hits include ‘Brother
Jukebox’ and ‘I'll Think of Something’ and he was awarded
the CMA Horizon Award in 1993.
When he shifted to the revived imprint Decca in 1994, Chesnutt
landed several more hits, including ‘It's a Little Too Late’
and the Aerosmith remake ‘I Don't Want to Miss a Thing.’ He
toured with Joe Diffie and Tracy Lawrence on the Rockin'
Roadhouse tour and released an album on Columbia Records in
2002, the album ‘Savin'
The Honky Tonk’ in
2004 on the independent label Vivaton, followed by ‘Heard
It in a Love Song’.
Other of Mark’s memorable hits include ‘Bubba Shot The
Jukebox,’ ‘Going Through The Big D,’ ‘Old Flames Have New
Names,’ and ‘It Sure Is Monday.’ Mark Chesnutt has a
classic country singer’s story, starting in the honky-tonks
of Texas singing covers of classic country singers to
develop his authentic country style. It was this style that
made him one of Billboard’s Ten Most Played Radio Artists of
the ‘90s, as well as garnering him four platinum albums,
five gold albums, CMA Horizon Award Winner with 14 number
one singles and 23 Top 10 Singles.
This is a free concert, with festival-style seating, so
bring a lawn chair or blanket and plan to come early, as
seating is limited.
‘We continue to provide bigger and better entertainment each
year’ says Festival Chairman Colby Peel. ‘With political
season in full swing, there will be an opportunity to meet
the candidates along with all that the festival offers.
With Mark Chesnutt we expect this year to be one of the
largest turnouts in the history of the Panhandle Watermelon
Festival and we invite everyone, young and old alike, to
come to Washington County and enjoy in this celebration’.

Deaf Ministry at Shiloh Baptist
Church
On February 24 Shiloh Baptist
Church on Hwy 277 in Chipley, Florida started three days of
a deaf ministry and outreach. A concert on Friday, February
24, a signing workshop on Saturday, February 25 and a
worship service on Sunday, February 26 were included in this
full weekend of fellowship.
‘The deaf are often
disenfranchised’ says Bob Hicks, who, along with wife Trisha
heads up the deaf ministry programs at Shiloh.
‘There are literally hundreds
of deaf people in this area who do not venture out of their
homes unless it is absolutely necessary and this weekend was
an attempt at awareness as well as an opportunity to get
these folks to an environment that was warm, welcoming and
full of what they need- communication’. The deaf ministry at
Shiloh enjoys several church members capable of signing,
each week volunteering their time to sign the church
services, from the music to the sermon, and the ministry is
growing.
‘This weekend concentrated on
the music end of communication’ stated Hicks, ‘and our
special guest was Ronaldo Feliciano from Tampa, an energetic
and charismatic preacher himself’. The workshop on Saturday
concentrated on the difference between signing the spoken
word versus signing music and song, which is more about
feeling and rhythm, as well as spirituality. On Sunday
morning a church service featured signed music along with a
sermon from Ronaldo Feliciano. For more info about Shiloh
Baptist Church, along with photo galleries and video clips

‘Legends & Lore’ Festival at
Falling Waters State Park
2009 was a wet year for Falling
Waters State Park, and you would think that the park
containing the tallest waterfall in Florida would welcome
the precipitation. However, when the Friends of Falling
Waters State Park were ready to execute their annual fund
raiser and educational effort, titled ‘Legends & Lore’
Festival, the skies opened and the event was a washout.
Last year was different when
organizer Amy Sweeney decided to offset the event by 3 weeks
to avoid some of the wetter weather, with the result a large
number of additions and improvements to the event, including
Civil War Renactors, a heritage art show courtesy of
Washington County Arts Council and Plein Air Tallahassee,
chain saw artistry, live musical entertainment on Saturday,
vintage farm equipment including antique tractors, hands-on
exhibitors of heritage arts and crafts including butter
making, corn shucking, basket making and much more. This
year will follow the same pattern, with Friday of the
two-day event set aside as an educational and awareness
effort directed at school children, and the school systems
have been invited to attend. Sweeney says ‘This opportunity
for young people to understand and embrace our heritage is a
large part of our effort in this event. The number of
hands-on demonstrations increases the fun, education and
appreciation for our heritage and history’.
Food and beverages are available, and Sweeney suggests
that the event features ‘festival style’ seating, so
attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair with them for
comfort. ‘The event is Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April
21,’ points out Sweeney, ‘and you can literally spend the
entire weekend and be entertained’. Advertising is funded in
part by the Washington County Tourist Development Council
and local sponsors in the past have included McDonalds of
Chipley, West Florida Electric, Tractor Supply, Community
South Credit Union and The Goulding Agency, Inc.

American Pit Bull Terrier Club
Hosts Dog Show and Competition
The Mid-Florida/Sunshine State
American Pit Bull Terrier Club will host two conformation
shows and weight pull competitions on March 31 and April 1
in Wausau, Florida. This will be the third event endorsed
and hosted by the group in Wausau. Lisa Hutches, a member
and competitor at the event, was interviewed on Real Florida
TV, and was pleased with the last event, held in November
2011. ‘We have been welcomed with open arms,’ states
Hutches, ‘and we have competitors from as far away as the
Midwest and the Mid-Atlantic states attend this show. We are
well pleased with the facility and the hospitality of the
area’.
The Executive Inn in Chipley,
Florida reported a full house during last fall’s event and
they, along with several other motels in the Chipley area
offer special package rates as well as ‘pet friendly’ rooms
to the show attendees. ‘We bring some positive economic
impact to the area at this time of year,’ states Sheree
Folmar, local President of the Sunshine State Pit Bull
Terrier Club.
‘We have found the merchants,
restaurant owners and hoteliers very receptive to our event
and we plan many more for the future’. The American Pit Bull
Terrier Club works toward education and familiarization of
the breed, originally called the Staffordshire Terrier,
later changed to Yankee Terriers and finally settled on
American Pit Bull Terriers. Sunshine State APBTC members
agree that Wausau and Washington County furnish the
friendly, inviting atmosphere that the event requires. More

Orange & Bluegrass Festival’ in
Vernon, Florida
The distinctive sound of
mandolins, upright bass, fiddles and steel guitars will fill
the air at the 3rd Annual Orange & Bluegrass Festival at The
Groves RV Resort in Vernon, Florida on Saturday, April 16,
2012.
The 2011 event drew several
hundred gospel and bluegrass music aficionados from around
the Florida Panhandle and Southeast Alabama, and featured
some of the area’s best Bluegrass and Gospel music artists,
showcasing ‘Deep South’ and ‘Grassroots’ from Panama City,
‘Sweetwater Run’ from Laurel Hill, ‘Jackie Hill and Blue
Shades of Grass’ from Tallahassee, along with ‘The Bluegrass
Pilgrims’ and ‘Big Bend Bluegrass’ from Chipley. This year
the festival will feature free admission, and will highlight
Grasscutters, Sweetwater Run, Deep South and Big Bend
Bluegrass in a concert setting from 3-7PM.
The Festival is the single largest fund raiser for the
Vernon Athletics Booster Club, and Mark Kirk, President of
the Boosters, says ‘With the deep cuts in
funding across the board we
have had to get creative about how to fund the sports
activities at the High School. We have formed a coalition of
parents who really care about the future of these kids, and
we are fortunate to have some parents who are willing to
work hard to make these things happen. With the help of the
Washington County Tourist Development Council and The Groves
RV Retreat, along with our sponsors, we offer this fantastic
event, in a cool, beautiful setting’. The Groves is billed
as ‘The Florida Panhandle’s Premier RV Retreat’ and with the
beautiful backdrop of Lucas Lake and Lake Dunford, a couple
of the last natural, unspoiled and unique lakes in the State
of Florida, the festival will be sure to please all who
attend. For a photo gallery from the 2011 event, and more

Woman’s Club of Chipley Bridal
Expo
The Woman’s Club of Chipley has
developed an event that is quickly becoming a staple in
Northwest Florida. The Club is preparing for the Third
Annual Bridal Expo, to be held Sunday, February 5 at the
Washington County Ag Center on Hwy. 90 in Chipley, Florida.
This free event features an
opportunity for vendors who work with special events,
including weddings and other gatherings, to showcase their
goods and services to a very large, lively and appreciative
audience.
The inaugural event, held in
January 2010, and which featured a fashion show, was a
resounding success and the Woman’s Club was so pleased with
the results that they have adopted the event as an annual
fund raising affair. Former Woman’s Club President Mike Lee
headed up the 2011 affair, aided in no small part by club
members, including Dorothy Clarke and Becky Yates.
‘The event is a large
undertaking for the Woman’s Club’ says Lee ‘and the spirit
of cooperation is strong in the club. We have some very
energetic women in this area and we are fortunate to be able
to utilize their talents in making this happen’.
Vendors at the event have
included caterers, photographers, florists, and event
planners, as well as musicians, and vendors of jewelry,
signage, printed collateral and associated services.
‘Our first two events were
larger successes than we could have anticipated’ says
Woman’s Club Past President Dorothy Clarke‘ and with the
help of the community and the Washington County Tourist
Development Council, we have adopted the event as an annual
exposition. The event is not just about weddings, despite
the name’, Clarke goes on ‘and any person interested in
having a party, special event or large gathering will
benefit from attending this free show, which highlights all
the vendors involved in this industry’.
Attendees and vendors have come from as far away as
Panama City and Tallahassee, as well as Dothan and Southeast
Alabama. ‘We bring a large number of people into Chipley and
Washington County for this event’ Club member Linda Cook
mentions ‘and it’s good business for everyone’. Because of
the large number of attendees the event draws from
neighboring areas, the event is underwritten in part by the
Washington County Tourist Development Council and features
free admission for attendees, with reasonable booth fees for
vendors. For further information and details about the

Glenn Miller Orchestra
Concert in Chipley, Florida

The Glenn Miller Orchestra will
making a concert stop in Chipley on February 7, 2012.
Through special arrangement by Dr. James Clemmons and the
Chipley High Band Boosters, this band will be in concert at
the Chipley High School Auditorium on Brickyard Road. The
legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all
the dance band leaders back in the Swing era of the 30’s and
40’s. A string of hit records, the constant impact of radio
broadcasts and the drawing power at theatres and dance
pavilions built and sustained popularity. Glenn Miller
disbanded his musical organization in 1942, at the height of
its popularity, volunteered for the Army and then organized
and led the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. It went
to Europe to entertain servicemen, and then, on December 15,
1944, Major Miller took off in a single-engine plane from
England to precede his band to France, never to be seen
again.
The army declared him
officially dead a year later and because of popular demand,
the Miller Estate authorized the formation of the present
Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1956 under the direction of
drummer Ray McKinley, who had become the unofficial leader
of the Army Air Force Band after Glenn’s disappearance.
Other leaders have followed Ray including clarinetists Buddy
DeFranco and Peanuts Hucko, trumpeter & jazz educator Dick
Lowenthal, drummer Clem DeRosa, trombonists Buddy Morrow,
Jimmy Henderson and Larry O’Brien, and tenor saxophonist
Dick Gerhart. The 19-member band continues to play many of
the original Miller arrangements that keep exciting fans who
have not heard them played for a while. The entire
repertoire which now exceeds 1,700 compositions keeps the
band popular with both young and old and most of the band’s
shows are sell-outs. The Glenn Miller Orchestra today is
still the most sought after big-band in the world just as it
was in Glenn’s day.
Tickets for the February 7, 2012 concert at
Chipley High School are only $20 for adults and $15 for
students and can be purchased from any CHS Band Booster or
through the CHS Band office at 638-6100, ext. 525. All seats
will be reserved for this 7PM concert in the CHS Auditorium
located in the center of the campus on Brickyard Road in
Chipley. Proceeds from the event will go to the Chipley Band
Boosters, whose mission is to support the band program at
CHS.

Skateboard Park at Chipley, Florida's PALS Park
The City of Chipley, Florida,
realizing that the youth in the area need a safe outlet for
their energy and creativity, has constructed a skateboard
park at PALS Park.

The story starts in 2003, when
the City of Chipley poured a concrete slab 40’ X 70’ with a
value of about $13,000 based upon a vision by the late Tommy
McDonald to expand PALS Park attractions beyond baseball and
softball fields. Over time, the facility was not completed
due several factors, but skateboarding continued to be an
issue for merchants and adults in the downtown area, and it
is actually a misdemeanor and the city police can issue
tickets for the infraction.
By the fall of 2010, the
skateboarding problem in Chipley had become a recurring
issue for the City Council, the youth leaders in the
skateboarding groups, and for merchants and residents in the
vicinity of skateboarding areas. City Council member Cheryl
Gainer McCall took the initiative to bring the parties
together to seek a solution. The youth leaders most involved
were Devon James, Chris Colero, and John Sweeney.
Estimates were obtained from
West Florida Regional Planning Council (WFRPC) and a
suggested cost of up to $100,000 to construct the complete
skateboard facility was considered. At a city council
meeting held in December 2010 the Chipley City Council heard
from about 25 skateboarders, parents, merchants, watched a
video presentation from Alan Grey at WFRPC, and approved
moving forward with a design. Skateboarders and interested
adults visited several skateboard facilities and developed
the preliminary design to be used at PALS Park.
In January 2011, Greta Draayom,
a teacher at Roulhac Middle School helped the youth leaders
develop a PowerPoint presentation with design concepts that
was used at the City Council meeting on February 3, 2011, to
bring the council up to date on progress. The project
supporters, both youth and adults, were also spreading the
word and seeking public financial support.
In addition to the three
primary youth leaders, and those previously listed above,
other adults who stepped forward were Dan Miner, Chipley
city administrator and his staff, city work crews, Vivian
McDonald, Barbara James, Kim McDonald, Zack Dixon, and Jeff
James. Tonya Taylor, drafting instructor at
Washington-Holmes Technical Center and student Jarred
Grayber provided the detailed construction plans and in June
2011, Devon James and the youth leaders presented the
project to the City Council for final approval to construct
the initial additions to the concrete slab. During the
summer, the City of Chipley has allocated inmate labor and
city crews as available and the facility is now usable by
skateboarders with a box, rail and pyramid in-place along
with a quarter-pipe with ramp and stairs.
There is still a need for
public donations to complete the remainder of the project
and they can be made at City Hall and designated for the
Skateboard Park. More info, along with photos, can be found
on the City of Chipley web site at
www.CityOfChipley.com
and on their Facebook page.

Vernon Historical Society
‘Bridges the Past With the Future’
The Vernon Historical
preservation effort began in September 1998 to collect,
preserve and publicly display artifacts, photographs and
documents representative of
the people, places, events and
lifestyles of Vernon, Florida and the surrounding communities.
The group started with eighteen like-minded citizens in an
effort to educate, and membership currently includes
representatives from across
the state.
The Vernon Historical Society
Museum, in Vernon City Hall, is open to the public on
Wednesdays 10AM-2PM. Historical Society meetings are held the
fourth Wednesday each month at 2PM in the Museum and open to
the public. If you would like to be a part of preserving this
heritage and the Vernon Historical Society, check out the web
site at
www.VernonFlorida.org or contact Angia
Morris, Society President, at 850-849-0238 or email at
info@VernonFlorida.org.
Vernon was Washington County’s
first seat of government, and the town remained the county
seat from around 1850 until 1927, when the city of Chipley,
after several attempts to get the county seat moved, won the
seat designation in an election over Vernon. The first county
courthouse at Vernon, a wooden structure, burned around 1885
and destroyed all of the early county records except the
school board minutes. A local hotel served as the courthouse
until 1897 when a new brick courthouse was built.
A county jail was built in 1892
and in 1902 the roof of the courthouse and part
of the jail roof was blown off
when a severe thunderstorm hit the area. A shift of county
boundaries in 1913 and 1915 affected the political balance of
the County and in 1927, an election determined that Chipley
would become the county seat, and county offices were moved to
Chipley. After the move, the old courthouse was mainly
used by the Vernon High School and some businesses occupied
the
ground floor of the old
building.
The Roche family obtained the
property in the late 1940’s and the structure was torn down in
the early 1950’s. In honor of their deceased son, Irving
(Happy) Roche, Jr., the family donated the property to the
City of Vernon with the stipulation it would remain a city
park or ownership would revert back to the family, and it
remains as such today. The original brick building housing
Vernon High School was constructed in 1931, and, following the
destruction of the grammar school by fire, a new wing was
added in 1951 to accommodate elementary
students.
Following the end of school
segregation in 1965, Shady Grove School students were enrolled
in the Vernon public schools. Separate school facilities now
exist for the elementary, middle and high schools and the
historic 80-year-old high school building has been renovated,
currently serving as the City of Vernon City Hall and the
Vernon Historical Society Museum.
The original wooden bridge over
Holmes Creek was built in 1887 and replaced the William Yates
Ferry. In 1939, the concrete bridge was constructed and the
McQuagge Bridge, commonly referred to as the Vernon Bridge,
has remained a landmark for 70 years. The bridge is being
replaced with a four-lane bridge and with the planned changes,
the town is taking on a different look. The history and
memories will
remain, however, due in large
part to the Historical Society.

Chipley High Band Commemorates
Veteran’s Day
Looking for ways to attract
visitors to Downtown Chipley, the Merchants of Historic
Downtown Chipley organized and executed a series of events in
2011 designed to enhance awareness for the area and to
highlight the seasonal offerings of this quaint historic town.
Events have included the annual Halloween ‘Trunk or Treat’ as
well as several musical events.
On the eve of Veteran’s Day the
Chipley High School Band performed at the Train Depot in a
Veteran’s Day Salute. Band director Richard Davenport
complimented the band, who had practiced for this event for
only a short while but performed admirably. Despite cold
temperatures, the band played to an enthusiastic crowd and the
event will most likely become an annual offering of the area.

Mid-Atlantic states attend
this show and we are well
pleased with the facility and the hospitality of the area.
Many of our competitors left snow behind to attend this event
and they are happy to be here, to say the least’. The
Executive Inn in Chipley, Florida reported a full house for
Friday and Saturday nights, and several other motels in the
Chipley area also reported increased occupancy due to this

‘Sometimes bad behavior by
owners of dogs is responsible for the bad behavior of the
dogs, and the clinic helps to show dog owners potential issues
with their respective
behavior’ stated Jordan.

National Blue Star Memorial Highway Program

The National Blue Star Memorial
Highway Program has designated Highway 77 from I-10 south to
FL Hwy 20 for special recognition. Proponent for this
designation is the Wausau Garden Club and project chair
Jeraline ("Jerry") Tharp.
The Blue Star program dates from
1916 and was started with a flag design featuring a blue
star to recognize men and women who had served in the armed
forces during World War I. In 1917, the U.S. Congress
approved the design and during World War II the practice of
a home displaying a blue star for family members serving, a
gold star for a family member killed in war, and a silver
star for a wounded family member. In 1951, Congress added a
provision that the program was extended to all citizens who
served in the armed forces during a war, but the practice
became dormant until 1990 with the Gulf War.

In 1944, a program to designate
highways as Blue Star Highways was started by the New Jersey
State Council of Garden Clubs and the highway program
expanded to national participation and operates today under
the National Garden Clubs, Inc. The Wausau Garden Club
raised over $1,300 for the monument to be placed in Wausau
across from the Methodist Church on Hwy 77.
The commemorative ceremony will be
held November 11, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. in Wausau with the
public invited. The Florida Department of Transportation
will assist with installation of the roadside monument and
signage. Part of the designated highway program involves a
living memorial along the highway with trees, bushes, plants
and other landscaping, and the Wausau Garden Club will be
providing a permanent planting in the vicinity of the
roadside marker.
In Washington County, the other
designated Flue Star Memorial Highway is U.S. 90 through
Chipley with the monument installed in front of the FDOT
complex. In addition to the Blue Star Memorial Highway
designations, it is possible for garden clubs to also
nominate sites for Memorial Markers and By-Way markers that
can be used in parks, veterans facilities, public gardens,
and other suitable sites.
The Wausau Garden Club meets the
3rd Wednesday monthly in the Wausau Town Hall and if
interested in participating in club activities, contact Inga
Ross at 638-8868 or Roxanne Bush at 638-7918 for more
details.

City of Chipley Prepares Skate
Park
The City of Chipley, realizing
that the teens of the area need an outlet for their energy
and creativity, has embarked on the construction of a
skateboard park at Pals Park, not far from Downtown Chipley.
While actual construction is a noteworthy achievement, the
real success story is in how it came to be through the
initiative of local skateboarding youth and many adults who
provided support.
The story starts in 2003, when the
City of Chipley poured a concrete slab 40’ X 70’ with a
value of about $13,000 based upon a vision by the late Tommy
McDonald to expand PALS Park attractions beyond baseball and
softball fields. Over time, the facility was not
completed due several factors, but skateboarding continued
to be an issue for merchants and adults in the downtown
area, and it’s also a misdemeanor if the police issue
tickets.
Estimates
were obtained from West Florida Regional Planning Council (WFRPC)
that it might cost up to $100,000 to construct the complete
facility in the vicinity of the existing concrete slab.
Final cost to date is about $5,000
due to tremendous support that appeared from a variety of
sources, but the project is not yet fully completed. At a
city council meeting held on December 9, 2010, the Chipley
City Council heard from about 25 skateboarders, parents,
merchants, watched a video presentation from Alan Grey at
WFRPC, and approved moving forward with a design.
Skateboarders and interested adults visited several
skateboard facilities and developed the preliminary design
to be used at PALS Park.
In January 2011, Greta Draayom, a
teacher at Roulhac Middle School helped the youth leaders
develop a PowerPoint presentation with design concepts that
was used at the City Council meeting on February 3, 2011, to
bring the council up to date on progress. The project
supporters, both youth and adults, were also spreading the
word and seeking public financial support. Tonya Taylor,
drafting instructor at Washington-Holmes Technical Center,
and student Jarred Grayber, provided the detailed
construction plans. On June 18, 2011, Devon James and the
youth leaders presented the project to the City Council for
final approval to construct the initial additions to the
concrete slab.
During the summer, the City of
Chipley has allocated inmate labor and city crews as
available. The facility is now usable by skateboarders with
a box, rail and pyramid in-place (skateboarders know what
these are) and the foundation has been laid for the ¼-pipe
with ramp and stairs. There is still a need for public
donations to complete the remainder of the project and they
can be made at City Hall and designated for the Skateboard
Park. In addition to more rails, boxes, and other challenges
on the slab, the most pressing need is for a pole barn about
12’ X 20’ to provide shade and shelter.
More information about the
skateboard park can be found on the City web site at
www.CityOfChipley.com
and their Facebook page.
In addition to the three primary
youth leaders, and those previously listed above, other
adults who stepped forward were Dan Miner, Chipley city
administrator and his staff, city work crews, Vivian
McDonald, Barbara James, Kim McDonald, Zack Dixon, and Jeff
James, Special mention needs to be made of City Council
member Cheryl Gainer McCall who challenged the youth
leadership to be persistent, set goals, organize their
efforts, and learn how the local government system functions
to provide facilities for its citizens.

Chipley, Florida Offers Up Autumn Events
Chipley offers many ways to enjoy the
‘Indian Summer’ season in Washington County and here is a
short list of some of those activities.
The perennial ‘Trunk or Treat’ is held each
year at the old Chipley High School School Track and upwards
of 2,500 children of all ages show up to grab swag, from the
simplest penny candy to some fairly sophisticated
confections.
Sponsored by the Merchants of Historic
Chipley, and embraced by a large number of businesses in the
community, the event gives local children an opportunity to
have Halloween ‘Trick-or-Treat’ in a safe environment, and
the word has quickly spread.
Visitors from
as far away as Dothan, Alabama and Panama City, Florida
attend each year. This year’s event will be held on Saturday
October 29 from 4-6PM. Bags for candy gathering will be
provided by the Merchants and the event is ‘first-come,
first-served’. Although nobody has ever been turned away,
there is always the potential for candy running out before
the attendees do, so better to get there early!
It’s not too soon to start marking your
calendar and making plans to attend the annual Downtown
Chipley Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 3 at 3:30PM.
As for the last several years, free photos
with Santa will be offered, this year at the Washington
County Historical Society Museum on 7th Street, adjacent to
the Railroad Depot. Photos will be offered free of charge
both before and after the parade.
On November 10 there will be a Veteran’s Day
Celebration at 6PM at the old downtown Train Depot, and the
event will feature a patriotic music concert by the Chipley
High School Band led by Richard Davenport. It’s ‘festival
style‘ seating, so bring a lawn chair or a blanket.
More
information and photos, along with video clips, from these
various events and more scheduled throughout the year are

Wausau 'Possum King & Queen Contest' Kicks
Off Wausau Possum Festival
Whether you were young or old, rich or poor,
a contestant or an attendee, the one common element among
all at the Wausau ‘Possum King & Queen Contest’ on Friday,
August 5 was the heat. Women glistened and men sweat as the
evening provided little cool breeze but did provide several
hours of truly unique entertainment.
Several hundred amused attendees joined a
field of 15 competitors to kick off the 42nd
Annual Wausau Possum Festival in Wausau, Florida and the
standing-room-only crowd was not disappointed.
Proclaimed by Woman’s Day Magazine in
2010 as ‘One of the most unique festival in America’, the
Wausau Possum Festival enjoys a heritage rich in tradition,
community spirit and good old-fashioned fun.
Contest judges Washington County Sheriff

contestants was the most outlandish and best represented the
spirit of the Wausau Possum Festival.

everything from festival logistics and security to promotion

Inaugural Wausau 'Possum Classic' 3D Archery
Tournament Successful
Rain was the only factor not favoring the
Inaugural 'Possum Classic' 3D Archery Tournament on July 16
in Wausau, Florida, and even that did not deter a group of
dedicated bow aficionados from competing.
Although expecting a larger number of
archers, the field of almost 30 contestants that did travel
to this rural town was not disappointed with the event.
Organizers are already looking toward larger venues in which
to hold next year's event, which was met with approval from
contestants and sponsors alike. ‘If you promote all your
events like you did this one, you can expect us to be a part
of these in the future’, stated Donny Bush from ‘Nock ‘N
Load’ in Bonifay, Florida. A major presenter of the event,
‘Nock ‘N Load’ provided the range of 3D targets for the
tournament.
‘Looking forward, we can see that this event
will grow, and draw from the surrounding region.’ states
Wausau Fire Chief Sam Rudd, ‘We had contestants from Holmes,
Jackson and Bay County, as well as a few from the Slocumb,
Alabama area. This group of competitors was accompanied by
almost 100 spectators, so the impact was good, especially
for a first-time event. We have room to grow the event, and
with facilities such as Hard Labor Creek right here in
Washington County, there will be room to partner with other
businesses and grow the event over time’.
'3D Archery is reportedly the fastest-growing
sport in the United States' states Greg Mayo, a volunteer
fireman and one of the organizers of the tournament. 'We
knew that popularity would get some attention and we’re
pleased with the overall event, especially in light of the
heavy rain on the day of the tournament, and we appreciate
all the help from our sponsors’.
The event was executed by the Wausau
Volunteer Fire Department and sponsored by Nock ‘N Load.
Participating sponsors included King’s Outdoor, Orange Hill
Express, Seaborn’s Auto and Pizza Hut of Chipley. The
Washington County Tourist Development Council also helped to
fund some of the advertising for the event.
Winners in the event included, in Hunter
Class, 1st place Edward Mitchell, 2nd
place Travis Manship and 3rd place Jason Pugh; in
Traditional Class, 1st place Steve Cosby, 2nd
place Steve Hawthorne and 3rd place Art Harris;
in Youth Class, 1st place went to Tye Cauley, 2nd
place to Lancin Dybdal and 3rd place to Cody
Lumpkin and in the Women’s Class, 1st place went
to Sara Rudd and 2nd place to Ginney Miles.

Wausau Plans Inaugural
'Possum Classic' 3D Archery Tournament
Arguably best known for the annual Possum Festival,
Wausau, Florida is planning it's first 'Possum Classic' 3D Archery
Tournament, slated for July 16 in this heritage southern town.
Expecting a field of around 100 top-flight
archers from around the southeast U.S., the tournament is expected to
become an annual event, and organizers are already looking toward larger
venues in which to hold next year's event.
'3D Archery is reportedly the single
fastest-growing sport in the United States' states Wausau Fire Chief Sam
Rudd 'and we' like to be able to build on that popularity to get folks
to visit our area to enjoy our town and our quality of life'.
The event, like the annual Possum
Festival, will be executed by the Volunteer Fire Department, not an easy
chore in the 100 plus degree heat of this summer. 'It'll be hot'

Pageants are Alive and Well in Washington
County, Florida

One of our most plentiful natural resources
has always been beautiful Southern women, and the annual
pageant season brings out the best of the best in several
local pageants.
The
‘Miss Firecracker’ Pageant
kicks off the Vernon July 4 Celebration, while the perennial
‘Miss
Panhandle Watermelon’ Pageant
remains arguably one of the best known events.
Open to girls of any age, from birth to over
30, the
‘Miss
Firecracker’ Pageant
was held on June 4 at the Vernon Community Center and
available this year were the Jr. Miss and Miss Independence
categories, with results based on ad sales in the pageant
program.
Laura Brewer has been the long-time Pageant
Director, and with over 50 young ladies in the pageant this
year, the event was colorful and successful. Registration
for the pageant is on a date-sensitive, sliding scale, and
results and photo galleries are available at
www.MissFirecracker.info.
The ‘Miss
Panhandle Watermelon’ Pageant
kicks off the
Panhandle Watermelon Festival
and with a field of contestants so large that the event
required two nights, was held June 10 and 11 at the
Washington County Ag Center in Chipley.
With a combined attendance of over 700 from
Florida, Georgia and Alabama, and with 574 paid attendees,
the pageant drew 93 contestants in 12 categories was truly a
spectacular, and Pageant Director Teresa Bush is to be
congratulated.

Panhandle Watermelon’
Pageant can

The Wausau “Little King and Queen’ Pageant is
held the week prior to the Wausau Possum Festival, and draws
a large audience.
Not to be confused with the Possum King and
Queen Contest, this pageant tags along as part of ‘One of
the Most Unique Festivals in the World’ according to Women’s
Day Magazine.

Wausau,
Florida Possum Festival Ready For 2011

Although some might consider the animal a
nuisance, the opossum plays a crucial role in the past and
present of Wausau, Florida.
Wausau has been blessed with a bountiful
population of opossum, Dalton Carter said. During the Great
Depression the animal provided a buffer against starvation
as many families only had baked opossum on their plates at
dinner time, he said.
In 1970, when he was charged with creating a
community festival, Carter said it was long past time for
someone to pay tribute to the animal.
“They have Goat Day in Blountstown; in
Calvary, Ga., they have a Mule Day; Port St. Joe has the
Scallop Festival. I said why don’t nobody give the possum a
day,” he said.
So the Possum Festival was born.
These days, the marsupial’s namesake provides
sustenance for the town in the form of cash reserves. Mayor
Roger Hagan said the festival each year draws 7,000 to
10,000 people to a town with a population of about 350. The
money that visitors spend at the Possum Festival has funded
scholarships and built community resources including a
basketball court and baseball field.
Carter credits good, clean family fun for the
enduring success of the annual event.
“You don’t see anybody drunk here,” he said.
“You don’t see any beer cans. In all the years we’ve
had this we’ve never had anyone causing problems because we
don’t tolerate it.”
Wausau Mayor Roger Hagan agreed with Carter.
In 1970, he said Carter was charged with creating a
community event that would bring the people of Wausau
together. He brought in entertainment, food and
planned activities, including a parade, that would appeal to
everyone in the town.
“That’s the foundation it started on and
we’ve stayed true to that,” Hagan said. “There’s something
for everyone. Events have changed with the face of society …
but there’s truly something here everyone can enjoy.”
For locals, the Possum Festival is a point of
history and great pride. Possum King Derek Blount, or
“Po Dirt” as he prefers to be called in his cut-off jean
shorts, cowboy boots, mullet wig and painted-on sideburns,
said he entered the spoof dress-up competition in honor of
his grandmother, who was the first Possum Queen.
“Wausau is a tight-knit community and this is
a chance for friends and family and people can all get
together,” he said.
Marsha Hayes, a Wausau native, said some of
her earliest memories include the Possum Festival.
“I grew up here,” she said. “I’ve been coming
here since I was a little girl. People come home for this.”
Last year, Hayes made the jump from a
festival visitor to a participant as she campaigned for
Washington County Commission District 4. Hayes
solidified her candidacy when she bought an opossum for $400
during the Possum Auction, a highlight of the festival.
The Possum Auction has become a must for
state and local politicians on the campaign trail.
Like countless leaders before them, candidates for offices
from governor to school board member spent hundreds of
dollars on opossums that were captured by a variety of
agencies. The animals themselves are returned to the
fire department to be released. The money raised
benefits the Wausau Volunteer Fire Department, the senior
center and the Wausau Community Development Club. Over
the years, Hagan said the funds have been used for
scholarships and to provide community resources, including a
baseball field.
“It goes to the community; that’s why I did
it,” Hayes said.
Gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink also bought
an opossum at the auction and said small-town festivals and
community events are the life blood of the state and a
critical draw for tourism.
“It’s a way for Florida to come together,”
she said. “We don’t care if it’s 60 degrees or 160 degrees.
We love to be out and socializing. It’s the history of
Florida and the flavor of Florida.”

A Place in Florida – Let’s Cheer the Lowly
Possum
Bу Gene Ingle
Thеrе′s a рlасе іn Florida thаt built a
12-foot-high monument іn thе middle οf town tο exalt thе
lowly possum. Now, whу wουld anyone want tο dο thаt?
Well, first οff, heroes аrе hard tο come bу
іn thіѕ рlасе іn Florida – thе Panhandle town οf Wausau,
home οf fewer thаn 500 persons іn thе middle οf Washington
County аbουt 10 miles south οf Chipley.
Whу nοt thе possum, аn unlikely hero tο ѕау
thе lеаѕt? Nobody еlѕе puts thе possum οn a pedestal. Whу
nοt Wausau?
Secondly, back іn 1982, Wausau gοt tired οf
being left out οf thе Florida lists οf fun, fairs аnd
festivals. Eνеrу рlасе іn Florida needs a festival. And nοt
one рlасе іn Florida hаѕ a Possum Festival. Whу nοt Wausau?
If уου′ve never bееn tο Washington County,
уου probably wіll thіnk I’m mаkіng thіѕ up. If уου hаνе bееn
tο Washington County, уου′ll understand – аnd know thіѕ іѕ a
trυе ѕtοrу.
Wausau, іt turned out, hаd ѕοmе pretty
powerful possum politicians іn thе early ’80s.
Here аrе two things thеу accomplished:
Thеу persuaded thе Florida Legislature
tο proclaim thе first Saturday іn August аѕ Possum Day іn
Florida. Thаt led tο thе building οf thе monument along
State Highway 77 іn Wausau.
Thеу even gοt thе United States Congress tο
promote thе possum. Congress joined thе fun bу providing thе
funds fοr Wausau’s Possum Palace ѕο Wausau сουld hаνе a
рlасе tο hold іtѕ annual Fun Day аnd Possum Festival.
Featuring a queen contest аnd possum auction, аmοng οthеr
things, thе festival attracts thousands οf people each year,
аnd thеу lονе іt.
Time out fοr ѕοmе educating οf Northerners
here. Thе South’s possum іѕ thе same lowly animal уου call
opossum, (Whу υѕе seven letters whеn six wіll dο?) It’s a
smallish marsupial thаt lives іn trees аnd shows іtѕ υglу
body οnlу аt night.
Thаt’s whу, whеn уου′re іn thе rіght рlасе іn
Florida, уου саn hear possum hunters’ dogs baying аnd
barking. Treed bу dogs, thе possum ‘freezes’, ѕο іt’s nοt
difficult tο catch (οr shoot) one.
An inscription οn thе monument іn thе middle
οf Wausau cites thе possum’s role іn providing ‘both fur аnd
food’ throughout thе centuries. It goes οn tο ѕау: ‘Thеіr
presence here hаѕ provided a source οf nutritious аnd
flavorful food іn normal times аnd hаѕ bееn аn іmрοrtаnt aid
tο human survival іn times οf dіѕtrеѕѕ аnd critical need.’
Laugh іf уου lіkе. Thе people οf Wausau wіll
laugh wіth уου – whіlе downing baked possum аnd sweet
potatoes.

Panhandle
Watermelon Pageant in
Chipley, Florida Wraps Up
With Crowning of ‘Miss
Watermelon 2011’

The Panhandle
Watermelon
Festival’s ‘Miss Watermelon’
Pageant finished strong on
Saturday evening, with a
large field of contestants
from several surrounding
counties, and a
standing-room only audience.
Pageant Director Teresa
Bush decided to split the
event between Friday and
Saturday evenings due to the
large number of entrants,
and despite the hot weather
and crowded conditions, the
pageant went off without a
hitch. In heartfelt
comments Bush thanked the
audience on Saturday for
allowing her the honor of
the position. ‘I appreciate
your confidence in me and I
love you and your children’
Bush stated.
Saturday
evening saw categories
consisting of older girls,
including the prestigious
'Miss Watermelon' and photo
galleries from both evenings
of the ‘Miss Watermelon’
Pageant are available at
www.RealFloridaMagazine.info.
Results for
the various competitive
categories, including the
‘People’s Choice Award’ for
each category, will be
available soon. Those
crowned this weekend will
represent the Panhandle
Watermelon Festival in the
Watermelon Parade on
Saturday, June 25 in
Downtown Chipley, and will
also be highlighted at the
Ag Center later that same
day.
This year’s
Panhandle Watermelon
Festival will commemorate
the 55 year
history of the event, and
will include several new
features, such as a
fireworks show courtesy of
Community South Credit
Union, on Friday evening
following the John Anderson
Concert. The festival is
sponsored in part by The
Washington County Tourist
Development Council, which
underwrites some of the
advertising costs for the
event in order to promote
visitation to Washington
County.

Panhandle Watermelon Festival Enjoys
First of Two Nights of Pageantry

The 55th Annual Panhandle Watermelon
Festival kicked off Friday evening in Chipley, Florida
with the ‘Miss Watermelon’ Pageant at the Ag Center on
Highway 90.
Pageant Director Teresa Bush found that
the field of contestants was too large to hold the event
in one single evening, as has typically been done in the
past. 'With the large number of girls in the pageant
this year we decided to split the event between Friday
and Saturday evenings', Bush explains. 'On Friday
evening we enjoyed the younger categories while Saturday
evening will showcase the older girls, including the
prestigious 'Miss Watermelon'.
The ‘Miss Watermelon’ Pageant has been a
part of the Panhandle Watermelon Festival for many
years, with many contestants going on to regional
pageants.

pageants.
Photo galleries from ‘Miss Watermelon’
Pageant the pageant are available at

One feature of this year's pageant was
the 'People's Choice' Award in each age group, with fans
of contestants contributing to a fund in the name of
that contestant. The contestant with the highest fund
raising won that category, with the proceeds going
toward underwriting the cost of the Watermelon Festival.
Festival Chairman Judge Colby Peel notes
‘The Panhandle Watermelon Festival remains one of the
only totally free festivals in Northwest Florida.
We try to provide something for everyone and this year’s
high-profile entertainment, especially the enhanced
Friday night concerts with Nashville Recording Artists
John Anderson and Chad Street takes this heritage
festival to a new level. The event is free for
attendees, but it costs over $30,000 to effect the
event, and with the help of community partners, we raise
that money so the public might enjoy the weekend of
entertainment at no cost'.
Sponsors of the ‘ Panhandle Watermelon
Festival’ include Community South Credit Union,
Northwest Florida Community Hospital and McDonalds of
Chipley, along with many other businesses and
individuals.
‘Fun Night’ at Pals Park in Chipley on
Friday, June 24 will feature Chad Street at 6PM followed
by Country Recording Artist John Anderson. The festival
on Saturday, June 25 includes a free concert in the Ag
Center in Chipley featuring Big Bend Bluegrass and
culminating at 2PM with Wilson Fairchild live in
concert.
The free concert at Pals Park on Friday,
June 24 includes food, music, entertainment for the kids
and for the first time, a fireworks show, funded by
Community South Credit Union.
Saturday festivities kick off with the
Watermelon Parade in Downtown Chipley, a classic car
show, a 5k run, a huge arts and crafts vendor area,
along with great food, recognition of Pageant Queens,
live entertainment and the
annual watermelon auction at 11AM with auctioneer
David Corbin.
Peel goes on to say ‘Washington County
has much to offer and we appreciate the Washington
County Tourist Development Council and our community
partners and sponsors working with us toward the success
of this event. We invite everyone-young and old alike-
to come to Washington County and join us
in this celebration.’

Town of Wausau, Florida Prepares for 42nd
Annual Wausau Possum Festival

Margaret Riley, clerk for this small
rural town in Northwest Florida announced today that the
town is preparing for the 42nd annual celebration of
their heritage festival, the Wausau Funday and Possum
Festival, to be held Saturday, August 6.
Admittedly one of the most unusual and
unique festivals in Northwest Florida, this event
celebrates the Possum, a marsupial which thrives in this
part of Florida and which helped the local population
survive the great depression in the early 20th
century.
The Festival draws attendees from all
over the Southeast United States, and is held the first
Saturday in August. Hits on the festival web site
www.WausauPossumFestival.com average several hundred a day for several
months prior to the festival, and the web site is
already receiving news coverage from across the nation,
documenting this unique event.
One aspect of the event, the annual
Possum King and Queen Contest, hosted by local media
personality Wayne Gentry of WMBB-TV News 13 and held the
evening before the Festival, in itself is a notable
event. Video clips of this unique pageant may be viewed
on the web site
www.RealFloridaTV.com as well as on the
festival web site.
Sam Rudd, chief of the local Wausau

55th Annual Panhandle Watermelon Festival in
Chipley, Florida Announces 2011 Entertainment Lineup
Judge Colby Peel, Chairman of the Panhandle
Watermelon Festival in Chipley, Florida announced today that
the 2011 Festival entertainment has been confirmed.
‘Fun Night’ at Pals Park in Chipley on
Friday, June 24 will feature Chad Street at 6PM
followed by Country Recording Artist John Anderson.
The festival on Saturday, June 25 includes a free concert in
the Ag Center in Chipley featuring Big Bend Bluegrass
and culminating at 2PM with Wilson Fairchild live in
concert.

Born and raised in Dothan, Alabama, Chad
Street’s earliest musical influences included Merle
Haggard, Conway Twitty and George Strait, and over the past
decade Chad has had the good fortune to play with or open
for some of the bigger names in country music, including
Keith Urban, Emerson Drive, Blake Shelton, Wade Hayes, Merle
Haggard,
David Allan Coe and Darryl Worley.
John Anderson
was born in Apopka, Florida in 1955 and grew up listening to
rock & roll, until he discovered country music at age 15.
He moved to Nashville in the early '70s and secured a
contract with Warner Bros., releasing his first single in
1978.

Hit songs included "1959" and "Chicken
in 1981, and "I'm Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I'm Gonna
Be a Diamond Someday)" went Top Five later that year.
1982's "Wild and Blue" was Anderson's first chart-topper,
and he duplicated that feat twice in 1983 with "Black Sheep"
and the million-selling "Swingin'," the latter of which was
the biggest-selling country single in Warner Bros. history.
Anderson mounted a major comeback in the
early '90s, starting with 1992's Seminole Wind. Its title
track went to number two, and the follow-up, "Straight
Tequila Night," went all the way to number one; "When It
Comes to You" also made the Top Five. Anderson scored
another number one in 1993 with "Money in the Bank" and hit
the Top Five three times over 1994-1995 with "I Wish I Could
Have Been There," "I've Got It Made," and "Bend Until It
Breaks."

The free concert at Pals Park on Friday, June
24 includes food, music, entertainment for the kids and
possibly a fireworks show, and those details will be
released when they are confirmed.
Saturday festivities kick off with the
Watermelon Parade in Downtown Chipley, a classic car
show, a 5k run, a huge arts and crafts vendor area, along
with great food, recognition of Pageant Queens, live
entertainment and the
annual watermelon auction at 11AM with auctioneer
David Corbin.
Big Bend Bluegrass
from Chipley, Florida features
James Hood
on guitar, Danny Hood on mandolin, Wayne Martin on fiddle,
Crystal Owens on bass and Carolyne Van Lierop on banjo.

The sons of Harold and Don Reid of The
Statler Brothers, Wilson Fairchild, Wil and
Langdon Reid, seem more like brothers than cousins, and have
sung together professionally for over 15 years. Along with
their outstanding harmony, which is an inherent trademark
from their fathers, Wil and Langdon are prolific songwriters
who have had over 30 songs published and recorded. They
also play many different instruments, which makes an
impressive portfolio and contributes to their unique style.
Peel notes ‘The Panhandle Watermelon Festival
remains one of the only totally free festivals in Northwest
Florida. We try to provide something for everyone and this
year’s high-profile entertainment, especially the enhanced
Friday night concerts with top-shelf artists, takes this
heritage festival to a new level’.
Peel goes on to say ‘Washington County has
much to offer and we appreciate the Washington County
Tourist Development Council and our community partners and
sponsors working with us toward the success of this event.
We invite everyone-young and old alike-
to come to Washington County and join us
in this celebration.’
Community South Credit Union
and Northwest Florida Community Hospital in Chipley
are two of the presenting sponsors of this year’s event,
with WPAP (92.5FM) and Clear Channel Radio in
Panama City as radio media partner. More information,
including additional sponsors, entertainment and festival
features will be announced as they are confirmed.

‘Orange & Bluegrass’ Festival in Vernon, Florida A
Resounding Success

The distinctive sound of mandolins, fiddles and steel
guitars filled the air at the
2nd Annual
Orange & Bluegrass Festival at
The Groves RV Resort
in Vernon, Florida on Saturday, April 16.
Drawing hundreds
gospel and bluegrass music aficionados from around the
Florida Panhandle and Southeast Alabama, the event
featured some of the area’s best Bluegrass and Gospel
music artists, showcasing ‘Deep
South’
and ‘Grassroots’
from Panama City, ‘Sweetwater
Run’ from Laurel Hill, ‘Jackie
Hill and Blue Shades of Grass’ from
Tallahassee, along with ‘The
Bluegrass Pilgrims’ and ‘Big
Bend Bluegrass’ from Chipley.
This year the festival featured food and refreshments
from several Vernon school organizations as well as
Big
Daddy’s Café 79
from Vernon, Florida.
Sonny,
owner of
Big Daddy’s,
mentioned
‘We saw the TV commercials and many
people we spoke to in the restaurant knew about the
festival. This was a great event for a worthy cause and
we need more events like this in the community’.

The Orange & Bluegrass Festival
is the single largest fundraiser for the Vernon
Athletics Booster Club, and
Mark Kirk,
President of the Boosters, says ‘With the deep cuts in
funding across the board we have had to get creative
about how to fund the sports activities at the High
School. In order to allow our children to enjoy the
sports programs and other activities we have formed a
coalition of parents who really care about the future of
these kids, and we are fortunate to have some parents
who are willing to work hard to make these things
happen’.
The festival last year was challenged by hot weather and
logistical issues but Kirk says, ‘We started to plan
early this year, and with the gracious help of the
Washington County
Tourist Development Council and
The Groves RV Retreat,
we were able to offer a fantastic event, in a cool,
beautiful setting this year’.
Mack Carter,
owner of
Shuckum’s Oysters in Panama City Beach stated
‘We heard about this festival through the media and knew
this was a great opportunity to check out the area as
well as the festival’.
The Groves is billed as ‘The Florida Panhandle’s Premier
RV Retreat’ and with the beautiful backdrop of Lucas
Lake and Lake Dunford, a couple of the last natural,
unspoiled and unique lakes in the State of Florida, the
festival pleased all who attended. Consisting of 350
pristine acres surrounded by three lakes, the resort has
over two miles of shoreline. Located in Vernon, just 32
miles north of Panama City Beach and 12 miles south of
Bonifay, the facility can accommodate RV’s of all sizes,
from full-size coaches to pop-up tents. More
information about the site can be had by calling (850)

Tourism
pivots toward summer Courtesy John
Dunaway, Miles Media
Bed tax
collections for February were up more than 9 percent
over last year, and although it’s still too early for
2011 Spring Break figures, they look to be a little off
from a banner spring 2010 as the tourism industry now
pivots toward summer hopes, experts said Monday.
“I
think there is a real pent-up demand from last year,”
Mike Bennett, of Seahaven Beach Resorts, said of the
coming summer season. “We think they will be hungry to
get down here.”
Bennett, past chairman of the Bay County Tourism
Development Council (TDC), said he expects his
businesses to track at about 2009 levels for the 2011
March and April period, a drop of about 20 percent from
last year’s exceptional spring that had March bed taxes
collections up 18.5 percent over 2009.
Bed tax
take in February totaled $483,178.62, an increase of
$40,387.98 over 2010 collections of $442,790.64, or 9.12
percent, according to Charlene Honnen, Bay County
tourist development tax specialist.
As the
tourism industry begins to gaze into its summer crystal
ball, Florida Gov. Rick Scott announced Monday the
Northwest Florida Tourism Council (NWFTC), which
includes Bay County, will receive a $30 million
marketing grant from oil giant BP.
The
grant will be used to continue the Panhandle’s public
relations fight to drive tourists back to local beaches
after last year’s April 20 Deepwater Horizon oil spill,
an event that shattered the summer season.
Dan
Rowe, Bay County TDC executive director, said Bay
County’s share will come to just over $7 million and
will be used for marketing efforts for summer and fall
2011 and winter 2012. The NWFTC includes Bay, Walton,
Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Gulf and Franklin
counties.
“This
is big news for Panama City Beach,” Rowe said Monday,
adding that ecological damages to Northwest Florida
beaches have been cleaned, but economic damages still
must be repaired.
Local
restaurateur Jack Bishop said Monday that while his
March 2011 business was down slightly, April may prove
to be a better harbinger of the coming summer.
“I
think my March may be off by about 8 percent,” Bishop
said. “But April’s been pretty good. Last weekend was
almost like a summer weekend.”
April
customers tend to be older and more family-oriented than
the March college crowd, Bishop said. Like Bennett, he
also thinks there is a pent-up demand building in the
traditional summer customer.
Because
of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill last year, bed taxes
in June, July and August saw dips of 3.7, 14.5 and 14.7
percent, respectively, over the same months in 2009.
Beach
businesses count on the influx of tourism dollars during
the summer season — as well as Spring Break — to get
them through the slower months of the year.
Although both Bennett and Bishop agreed fewer college
students were enjoying the local sand this spring,
Philip Griffitts Jr., owner of Sugar Sands Inn & Suites,
said he was optimistic about his Spring Break numbers.
“Over
all, we were about the same as last year for March,”
said Griffitts. “April is tracking about the same as
well, and we have two weeks left. Easter has always been
a good weekend.”
The
first two week of March started off slow, he said, but
looking at the two months together, “it is really
finishing off nice.”

Friends of Falling Waters State Park Prepare
for 'Legends & Lore' Festival
President of Friends of Falling Waters State
Park Bill Maphis has announced that the organization is
preparing for the 2011 occurrence of the event, to be held
on April 15 and 16.
2010 was a huge success by all accounts, with
perfect weather, large crowds and a fantastic assembly of
vendors and exhibitors, from Civil War Re-enectors to candle
and soap makers, from home-spun regional musicians to story
tellers spinning yarns about the old Florida.
Local businesses such as Community South
Credit Union and the Washington County Arts Council, along
with McDonalds and other businesses have come forward with
sponsorship dollars and incentives, and the event truly is a
reflection of the Washington County area.
Allowing enhanced promotion and additional
features, these sponsors have embraced and helped fund the
event, and this year the event promises to exceed
expectations. The event has historically also been funded
in part by the Washington County Tourist Development
Council.
Friday, April 15 is set aside as an
educational and awareness effort directed at school
children, and the school systems in Bay, Holmes, Jackson and
Washington counties have been invited to attend. Maphis
says ‘We anticipate a record attendance by school children
and the opportunity for these young people to understand and
embrace our heritage is a large part of our effort in this
event. The number of hands-on demonstrations has increased
this year and the event is fun, educational and teaches a
little of our heritage and history’.
Features last year included a group of Civil
War Re-enactors, a heritage art show courtesy of Washington
County Arts Council and Plein Air Tallahassee, chain saw
artistry, live musical entertainment on Saturday featuring
The Webbs, Grassroots, Ernest Toole, Front Porch Pickers and
Country vocalist Shane Owens; vintage farm equipment
including antique tractors, hands-on exhibitors of heritage
arts and crafts including butter making, corn shucking,
basket making and much more. The 2011 event promises to
meet or exceed the expectations of past events.
Maphis points out that food and beverage
concessions will be available, and suggests that the event
features ‘festival style’ seating, so attendees are
encouraged to bring a lawn chair with them for comfort.
‘Event hours are 9AM-3PM on Friday, April 15 and 9AM-6PM on
Saturday, April 16’ points out Maphis ‘and you can literally
spend the entire day and be entertained’.
For more information on this story and the
event, contact President of ‘Friends of Falling Waters State
Park’ Bill Maphis at 850-638-8243 or visit
www.FriendsofFallingWaters.com to view details,
including an interview with Bill Maphis.
