Dear BGCBC Friends,

Our Club members and their families need your help.

Florida Governor Rick Scott is seriously considering taking funding for mentoring, gang and delinquency prevention programs OUT OF the 2011-2012 state budget-which could mean a loss of as much as $70,000 each year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bay County.

BACKGROUND

First, research shows that Boys & Girls Clubs members outperform their elementary school peers in reading and math, and had fewer absences. And Club members outperformed their middle school peers in math and grade promotion, and had fewer absences. On average, Clubs in Florida offer after-school services 245 days a year at a cost of JUST $0.06 per day/per kid.  And we take every kid that shows up on our doorstep.  Clearly, we provide the biggest bang for the buck and the greatest return on state funding.

Second, local youth most at risk of gang involvement and delinquent behavior are not seeking the constructive environment that Clubs like BGCBC can offer. Outreach programs that the state helps funds will be created to attract these youth to the Clubs. And this initiative is in perfect harmony with Governor Scott's goal to support prevention programs that reach youth BEFORE they get in trouble.
