Friday the 13th- The Myth and
The Reality
The fear of Friday the 13th is
called friggatriskaidekaphobia (Frigga being the name of the Norse
goddess for whom "Friday" is named and triskaidekaphobia meaning fear of
the number thirteen.
According to folklorists, there is no
written evidence for a "Friday the 13th" superstition before the 19th
century. Consequently, several theories have been proposed about the
origin of the Friday the 13th superstition. One theory states that it
is a modern amalgamation of two older superstitions: that thirteen is an
unlucky number and that Friday is an unlucky day.

Networking More But Enjoying It Less..?
If you’re like most people you’ve
experienced some frustration over the number of people who can’t carry
on a conversation without manically surfing their mobile device,
checking in and/or texting.
All too often this happens during business
meetings, while walking, during meals and when driving. So what’s up
with all this technology? Are our lives easier, more fun and more
productive because of these tools or are we heading backwards socially,
unable to give our full attention to where we actually are? From a
business standpoint, social networking is a dual-edged sword.

History of Valentines Day
There are varying opinions as to the origin
of Valentine’s Day. Some experts state that it originated from St.
Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up
Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had
been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left
a farewell note for the jailer’s daughter, who had become his friend,
and signed it "From Your Valentine".
Over time, February 14 has become the date
for exchanging love messages and a celebration of St. Valentine, the
patron saint of lovers. The date is marked by sending poems and simple
gifts, such as flowers, to loved ones and secret loves. By far,
Valentine’s Day Flowers are the most popular gift today.

Park at Chipley, Florida at PALS Park
The City of Chipley, Florida, realizing
that the youth in the area need a safe outlet for their energy and

The story starts in 2003, when the City of
Chipley poured a concrete slab 40’ X 70’ with a value of about $13,000
based upon a vision by the late Tommy McDonald to expand PALS Park
attractions beyond baseball and softball fields. Over time, the facility
was not completed due several factors, but skateboarding continued to be
an issue for merchants and adults in the downtown area, and it is
actually a misdemeanor and the city police can issue tickets for the

concert stop in Chipley on February 7, 2012. Through special arrangement
by Dr. James Clemmons and the Chipley High Band Boosters, this band will
be in concert at the Chipley High School Auditorium on Brickyard Road.
The legendary Glenn Miller was one of the most successful of all the
dance band leaders back in the Swing era of the 30’s and 40’s. A string
of hit records, the constant impact of radio broadcasts and the drawing
power at theatres and dance pavilions built and sustained popularity.
Glenn Miller disbanded his musical organization in 1942, at the height
of its popularity, volunteered for the Army and then organized and led
the famous Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band. It went to Europe to
entertain servicemen, and then, on December 15, 1944, Major Miller took
off in a single-engine plane from England to precede his band to France,
never to be seen again.

Think local - Buy local - Be local !!

It is sometimes more than a little
disconcerting to a small, local business that many people do not ‘shop
local’. Many times even governmental agencies, who supposedly serve
residents and business owners through tax money, sometimes outsource
goods and services to businesses outside the state and even outside the
country. We as a small business do not expect to get everyone’s
business, and we do not expect to be the low bidder on all projects, but
we do appreciate the ability to bid on local projects.
Many folks simply do not realize that they
can often times get superior products, superior service and added values
(listed below) from doing business locally. Prescriptions, clothing,
groceries, tools and automotive supplies are sometimes not only less
expensive, but also of higher quality and more easily accessible, from
the smaller ‘Mom and Pop’ shops versus the ‘big box’ stores. There is
nothing wrong with shopping at these larger outlet stores but we need to
be reminded that we often complain that our downtown areas are ‘drying
up’ but many times the reason is that WE do NOT shop there.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office
Public Service Officer Program
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is
hoping to draw on more community-minded men and women who have an
interest in becoming active members of the agency’s newest initiative;
the public service officer (PSO) program.
The program, scheduled to begin early 2012,
will recruit volunteers to assist sworn deputies by conducting
well-being checks and handling minor citizen complaints, such as
vandalism, bicycle thefts and found property. These PSOs also helped
deputies with traffic control and community events. According to Sheriff
Bobby Haddock, the agency’s extensive budget cuts have caused WCSO to
explore alternative options of improving service to the community, while
cutting the cost to do so. Public Service Officers will play a crucial
role in doing just that, freeing up officers to handle the day-to-day
operations of the Sheriff’s Office. PSOs will be assigned, primarily
during daylight hours, both to the east and west sides of the county,
seven days a week.

the U.S. Congress approved the design and during World War II the

County Ag Center on Real
Florida TV
Andy
Andreasen, County Extension
Director for the Washington
County Agricultural Service
recently made an appearance
on ‘Real Florida TV’ to
speak about ‘Florida
MarketMaker’, an interactive
mapping system that locates
businesses and markets of
agricultural products in
Florida, providing an
important link between
producers and consumers.
Andreasen
announced that there will be
a seminar presented at the
Washington County
Agricultural Service on
Tuesday, June 21, explaining
the values of ‘Florida
MarketMaker’ and featuring
an interactive opportunity
for local producers to
develop their own web sites
on the system.
The goal of
MarketMaker is to make the
site a resource for all
businesses in the food
supply chain. They are as
interested in helping a
grocery store find
farm-fresh eggs as they are
helping the farmer find a
place to sell them.
Andreasen
pointed out that this system
allows the small farmer or
producer to find markets for
his production, as well as

Tourism pivots toward summer Courtesy John
Dunaway, Miles Media
Bed tax
collections for February were up more than 9 percent over last year, and
although it’s still too early for 2011 Spring Break figures, they look
to be a little off from a banner spring 2010 as the tourism industry now
pivots toward summer hopes, experts said Monday.
“I think there is
a real pent-up demand from last year,” Mike Bennett, of Seahaven Beach
Resorts, said of the coming summer season. “We think they will be hungry
to get down here.”
Bennett, past
chairman of the Bay County Tourism Development Council (TDC), said he
expects his businesses to track at about 2009 levels for the 2011 March
and April period, a drop of about 20 percent from last year’s
exceptional spring that had March bed taxes collections up 18.5 percent
over 2009.

Northwest Florida Community
Hospital Showcases Hospital
Offerings

Northwest Florida
Community Hospital recently showcased the many improvements made at the
medical facility over the past few years, including the recently opened
new patient rooms at the hospital.
Another highlight
of patient care is the fully automated pharmacy. Medications are
readily available for the nurses from the automated dispensing cabinet
located in each nursing area. Patient safety is the highest priority
for the pharmacy department and because of this, each medication that is
placed in the cabinet is verified using a bar code scanner. Nurses also
verify they have removed the correct medication using bar code
scanning. The nurse scans the patient's arm band and then scans the
medication to make sure the right medication is given to the right
patient. The pharmacy dispenses approximately 100,000 does of
medication each year.
The new nurses
station on the second floor is arranged so both patients in ICU and
those being closely monitored in other patient rooms are easily
accessible. Hospital officials said since 2005 they have invested
approximately $ 9.9 million in improving the facility.

Gulf Tourism Officials Cautiously Optimistic
courtesy
associated press
Gulf Coast tourism officials who gathered for a meeting at a Florida
Panhandle resort in Destin, Florida this week weren't exactly jumping
for joy over the prospects for growth in 2011, even with the worst of
the recession and BP oil spill in their rear-view mirrors.
Instead, there was measured optimism that this would be a year of modest
recovery- that vacationers would continue coming back to the beaches and
seafood restaurants in communities whose images and economies were
battered by the oil spill last year.
The Deepwater Horizon explosion and spill occurred April 20, ruining the
lucrative summer season and the year for tourist enclaves that were
still fighting off the malaise of the recession. The gusher was finally
capped three months later.

Return On Investment For Business Travel
from the Center on Media Research
New research by American Express Global Business Travel and the GBTA
Foundation, Travel as a Competitive Advantage, offers further evidence
of travel's compelling link to corporate growth. The report concludes
that travel can be an overlooked means to gain competitive advantage,
and those companies that regard travel expenditures as indirect costs to
be minimized cut into a key established expansion driver.
This new study, Return on Investment Refresh: Travel as a Competitive
Advantage, is the continuation of research initiated in 2009 which first
explored the link between travel and business growth. The study shows
that the economy-wide average return on investment to business travel
spending is about 20-to-1, meaning that for every $1 strategically
invested in business travel, businesses have seen an average of $20 in
additional gross profit.

Beach
Town on Campus: Wooing
Spring Breakers
Courtesy
of Wall Street Journal
Panama City Beach officials are targeting spring break revelers.
Tourism officials from Panama City Beach, Florida., have been visiting
college campuses all over the snow-struck Midwest in recent weeks to
deliver a message: The spring break party is back on.
It
is a shift from just 18 months ago, when the town decided to pull back
from promoting college spring break, feeling that Panama City Beach's
reputation as the hotspot for drunken post-adolescent revelry was
keeping other visitors away.
But that was before the Deepwater Horizon oil spill last April, when tar
balls washed up along the town's beaches and tourism plummeted.

BP Says Spill Settlement Terms Are Too Generous
In
the eight months since Kenneth R. Feinberg took over the $20 billion
fund to compensate victims of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, he has been
attacked by many of those filing claims and by coastal state politicians
who argue that the process is opaque, arbitrary and slow.
Many of them have also argued that Mr. Feinberg’s recently published
estimates of future damage to those in the gulf are too optimistic, and
thus his offer of compensation in a final settlement is too low.
Now he is getting complaints from another quarter: BP.
